Inertia Filters
Self-cleaning inertial separators for sandy, dusty intake air.
Overview
What it does
Flow Dynamics supplies inertia filters, the standard pre-treatment for fresh-air intake in the Gulf, for buildings, gas turbines, and heavy industrial sites, any application where outdoor air is loaded with sand, dust, and salt. They use pure aerodynamics to separate particles from air with no moving parts, no disposable media, and no pressure drop increase over time. In a typical Abu Dhabi or Dubai installation, an inertia pre-filter extends the life of downstream bag and HEPA filters by a factor of five or more.
How it works
The working principle
Intake air is drawn through an array of V-shaped vanes that force a sharp change of direction. Air follows the curve, but heavier dust and sand particles, with higher inertia, continue in a straight line and are driven into a small bleed slot at the outside of each vane. A dedicated scavenge fan, typically sized at 10% of the main airflow, continuously draws this dust-laden slipstream out and discharges it back outside. The main airstream, now substantially cleaner, carries on to the downstream filter bank at the same pressure drop the unit had on day one.
Applications
Where it's used
Typical installations across the UAE and wider Gulf include:
- Gas turbine intake filtration
- Fresh-air intake to Gulf commercial buildings
- Desert-site data centres and telecom shelters
- Mining, quarrying, and cement plant ventilation
- Military and utility generator enclosures
- Offshore platform HVAC intake

FAQ
Common questions
Why put an inertia filter before bag or HEPA filters?
Because it strips the sand and coarse dust load aerodynamically, with no media to replace, a Gulf intake protected by an inertia stage typically extends downstream filter life by five times or more.
Do inertia filters need maintenance?
There are no moving parts in the separator itself and no media changes. The scavenge fan and bleed path are inspected on a routine cycle, and pressure drop stays constant for the life of the unit.
What size inertia filter bank do I need?
Send us the application, airflow or demand figures, and any consultant specification. Our engineers reply with a defended selection, datasheets and submittal documentation. Sizing is always confirmed by an engineer, never by a web calculator.
