Tunnel Ventilation
Heavy-duty longitudinal, transverse, and saccardo tunnel fans.
Overview
What it does
Flow Dynamics supplies tunnel ventilation fans for road, metro and infrastructure tunnels in the UAE and GCC. Road and metro tunnels need active ventilation both for daily air-quality management and for emergency smoke control. The range covers longitudinal jet fans mounted to the tunnel ceiling, transverse supply-and-extract fans connected to ductwork along the tunnel length, and Saccardo nozzles for portal injection. Products are built to AMCA 250 tunnel certification with motor classes rated for elevated temperature and for the corrosive, vibration-heavy tunnel environment.
How it works
The working principle
In longitudinal ventilation, a chain of ceiling-mounted jet fans pushes air along the tunnel length at 2–4 m/s under normal operation. During a fire, the system reverses or concentrates thrust to hold smoke back from the evacuation direction, a control strategy known as critical velocity. Transverse ventilation delivers fresh air through a supply duct along the tunnel length and extracts vitiated air through a parallel extract duct, giving uniform distribution independent of traffic direction. Saccardo nozzles inject a high-velocity jet at the tunnel portal to entrain and drive airflow without obstructing the tunnel bore.
Applications
Where it's used
Typical installations across the UAE and wider Gulf include:
- Road tunnels and highway underpasses
- Metro running tunnels and station ventilation
- Rail freight tunnels
- Long utility and cable tunnels
- Airport apron and baggage tunnels
- Military and critical-infrastructure tunnels

FAQ
Common questions
What certification do tunnel fans need?
Tunnel duty fans are built to AMCA 250 with temperature ratings from F200 to F400 depending on the emergency scenario, plus the corrosion and vibration specifications the tunnel environment demands.
Longitudinal or transverse ventilation for my tunnel?
Tunnel length, gradient, traffic mode and the fire strategy decide the concept; jet-fan longitudinal systems suit most road tunnels while long or bi-directional bores may need transverse or Saccardo schemes. We support the concept selection with the manufacturer.
Can you support the CFD and fire strategy submittal?
Send us the application, airflow or demand figures, and any consultant specification. Our engineers reply with a defended selection, datasheets and submittal documentation. Sizing is always confirmed by an engineer, never by a web calculator.
